Although most of the criteria to be fulfilled for being eligible for Federal Pell Grants are unchanging, recent years have seen some slight differences in the requirements for this grant program. The eligibility criteria for Federal Pell Grants are voted by the Congress, and changes in these criteria are made by them too. Previously, a student could be awarded two grants during an academic year. However, this criterion has been changed. In the 2011-2012 academic year, no student will be awarded more than one grant.
Another important change regarding eligibility for a grant is to the benefit of students, unlike the change outlined above. Taking even one course is enough to qualify for the Federal Pell Grant. Previously, only the students being enrolled at a prescribed minimum credit hours level were eligible for the grant.
As there are no more minimum enrollment hours to be eligible for the grant, grants are awarded also to students who need financial assistance for their summer school education.
